‘The most interesting part of any story is understanding how it all began.’
I wrote that at the start of 2024, thinking it would frame much of what lay ahead. At the time, our daughter Naomi was preparing to record four of her favourite original songs written over the course of her senior high school years — leaving the fifth to be composed during her studio recording process. As a family grounded in the arts (be it illustration, design, motion graphics — and yes, even commercial music), we felt a quiet sense of purpose, like something meaningful was beginning to take shape.
Now, on the day of her debut EP release, I’ve come to realize that while the unfolding of a creative process is as frightening as it is thrilling, it’s also where the real story lives. It’s in all the in-between moments that ideas are shaped, decisions made — where growth quietly happens.
From our perspective as her parents, witnessing the process unfold has been the most meaningful — and yes, the most interesting — part of this story.
Eighteen-year-old Naomi Skye is a singer-songwriter whose lyrics read like pages from a diary. Over the past several years, she’s been journaling daily, composing at the piano and on the guitar, recording every take along the way — unknowingly building toward this moment. She’s let the music lead, and we’ve done our best to let her lead, too; to support without interfering, to guide without steering. What an incredible synergy it’s been.
While the learning curve of music production, promotion, and commercial distribution has been overwhelming and fascinating at the same time, the authenticity of broken record has been our greatest accomplishment.
As a father with some pretty solid design accolades, Boyan has worked closely on Naomi’s visual identity — capturing and creating artwork that mirrors the tone and emotion of her songs. I’ve drawn from my own experience as a former recording artist, helping shape her vocal nuances, collectively developing a release strategy, and navigating today’s algorithmic landscape.
Through it all, Naomi has consistently set the tone — both in how her music sounds and how she’s portrayed. What’s amazed us most isn’t just the music she’s made, but the way she’s carried herself throughout the process — especially in the digital space.
Maintaining a presence on social media requires a delicate balance — especially when your songs come from such a personal place. But Naomi has stayed honest. She’s remained creative and true to her voice, finding ways to share pieces of herself without ever losing herself. Watching that unfold so naturally and organically has been one of the most inspiring parts of this journey.
We’re incredibly proud of Naomi, not just for what she’s releasing, but for how she’s doing it. We couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead, both for Naomi and for the audience that finds her. To return to my opening statement, maybe the beginning is where curiosity begins — but it’s in the unfolding, in the middle of it all, where the art, the purpose, the meaning really lives.
‘seems we opened a new chapter, and i want to read the rest.’
